Bryan Albin’s College Football Picks of the Week
5. #8 Michigan St. (-6) @ Northwestern (+6) – This has the makings of a trap game for Michigan St. Michigan St. has a visit to Iowa next week that it may be looking ahead to, but Northwestern is a solid football team with a 5-1 record. Northwestern has been known to pull a signature upset off each year as well, as last year it ended Iowa’s undefeated run.
Pick: Michigan St. 23 Northwestern 24 Northwestern covers
4. Air Force (+18.5) @ #4 TCU (-18.5)
TCU’s defense has been dominant of late, especially its run defense. Air Force is coming off a disappointing loss last week, but this is still a solid football team. I expect that Air Force will be able to play well enough to keep the game competitive until the 4th quarter, but TCU has too much talent and will open up the game late.
Pick: Air Force 13 TCU 31 Air Force covers
3. #13 Wisconsin (+6.5) @ #15 Iowa (-6.5)
How often does a team beat the # 1 team in the Country by 13 points one week and then find itself to be 6.5 point underdogs the next week? That is the scenario that Wisconsin faces this week as it will have to take its act to Iowa City to face a tough Hawkeye team after beating Ohio State. Iowa is coming off of a big win of its own though, as it physically beat up Michigan in the Big House a week ago. Each team has only one loss and each of those losses were on the road. Therefore, I’m going to take the home team in this one.
Pick: Wisconsin 13 Iowa 21 Iowa covers
2. #1 Oklahoma (-3) @ #11 Missouri (+3)
Oklahoma found itself ranked number 1 in the first edition of the BCS rankings. Now it will try and defend that position against another undefeated team in Missouri. If Oklahoma loses, it would be the third straight week that the top team in the nation lost. I’m not expecting that this will happen though. Oklahoma has a balanced offensive attack and is starting to gel. Meanwhile, Missouri has not really played anyone of significant difficulty yet, so I’ll take the Sooners.
Pick: Oklahoma 45 Missouri 31 Oklahoma Covers
1. #6 LSU (+6) @ #4 Auburn (-6)
One thing is for sure, there will be one less undefeated team after this game is played. Auburn is coming off of a thrilling 65-43 win over Arkansas in which QB Cam Newton became most people’s Heisman favorite. LSU on the other hand had a pretty restful week, as it played McNeese St. out of the FCS. The key to this game will be the LSU passing game. Auburn is very susceptible in its secondary, but LSU has struggled throwing the ball all season long. Whether it’s Jordan Jefferson or Jarrett Lee, LSU has to expose Auburn’s flawed secondary if it expects to keep up with Gus Malzahn’s high powered offense.
Pick: LSU 16 Auburn 27 Auburn covers
